Station design idiom
Oslo Metro stations
The Station Handbook is a tool for everyone involved in planning, construction and operation of Sporveien’s Metro stations in Oslo.
Introduction and background
In 2002, the Metro Handbook was established as a continuation of the work on developing the "Metro Standard" for the Oslo underground transport, and as a consequence of the competition project "Urban Nature," a new station concept.
The handbook was developed in collaboration with Reiulf Ramstad Architects AS, 13-3 Landscape Architects/Bjarne Aasen, and Odd Thorsen AS.
In 2009, the handbook was revised, and during the period 2011-2012, it was evaluated. However, the recommendations from the evaluation were not implemented, leading to unclear guidelines regarding station design.
Challenge
The goal for this project was to re-establish a handbook to be used when renewing, operating, and maintaining in- and outdoor stations in the Metro network.
The target audience for the handbook includes employees in Sporveien and Ruter, such as construction managers, signage planners, operations and maintenance teams, as well as external partners like architects, landscape architects, contractors, - anyone involved in station and information planning, design and procurement, operation, and maintenance of metro stations and station elements.
Approach
The goal of the update was to:
Establish a clear vision and objectives for the handbook, focusing on the purpose of the various solutions described
Describe standards and guidelines in a way that also allows for innovation and new thinking, ensuring adaptability to an unknown future
Develop a user-friendly handbook that is easy to understand, navigate, and apply in the planning and design of metro stations
There was a need to gather updated requirements and experiences regarding the existing Metro Handbook and station design in general.
The first step was to conduct a consultation round during the initial phase in the fall of 2015 among relevant stakeholders in Sporveien and Ruter.
New consultation rounds were held with the same groups in the fall of 2016, when the revised version of the Metro Handbook was completed. These consultations formed the basis for the changes made to the handbook.
Result
The revised handbook provides an overview of the whole station system and has been streamlined to focus solely on detailing physical construction and technical aspects. As a result, the handbook was renamed from the "Metro Handbook" to the "Station Handbook".
Other related areas, such as Ruter's signage program, Sporveien's safety signage program, technical regulations, etc, are referenced through links. When the content of these respective programs is updated, the Station Handbook will automatically refer to the latest guidelines.
The handbook itself has been created in digital format and is stored in Sporveien's electronic archive. The book is designed in A4 format, ensuring clarity and good design even in printed form.
